Vetiver Plantation: An Unprecedented Attempt of Mukti to Protect Sundarban
To protect the environment and to prevent soil erosion in the Sundarbans from the impact of cyclones, along with the mangroves, MUKTI has started to plant Vetiver grasses along the river embankments. Mukti has planted Vetiver grass in many places of Mukti village and will plant in many more places in Nagendrapur GP under Mathurapur block II.
From 29th October 2021, Friday Mukti has started planting Vetiver on the riverside slope of 1.5 Km river embankment of Purba Sridharpur (Mukti gram) under Nagendrapur GP, stretching from Bishalakshi Temple to sluice Gate. To date 4,500 Vetiver grasses have been planted. Mukti has an aim to plant 20,000 grasses.
15 women of Purba Sridharpur MCDF are working under “Food for Work” for planting and nurturing the grasses.
