Turkey Farming

Turkey farming occupies a major position next to chicken, duck and quail farming. Turkeys are suitable birds for the tropical climate of the Indian subcontinent. Though Turkeys lay eggs, they are more popular for their meat than for egg production. Turkey farming can be initiated with marginal capital and with good management, a farmer can make a good profit. Turkey farming is suitable for small and marginal farmers as they can be easily grown in free range or under semi-intensive systems with low investment as the birds require minimal shelter, equipment and management.

Mukti started Turkey farming as a pilot project in October 2021 at the farm of Mrs. Debika Chatui, one of the “Mukti sathi”s in Purba Sridharpur. Mukti bought 50 baby Turkeys with equal numbers of males and females. At present, there are 36 birds on the farm, as some of the birds died or were sold. After 8-9 months, the birds started laying eggs. The eggs will be put into incubator machines and they will take about 21 days to hatch. Grown female and male birds weigh about 7 and 11 kg respectively. If the implementation of the project is successful, Turkey meat and eggs will be sold in Kolkata through Mukti Fresh.
