‘Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink’ this line by famous English poet Samuel Taylor is sadly the reality for the residents of Sundarban islands. Surrounded by salty waters on all sides, people living in the inhibited islands of the world’s largest mangrove forest, getting access to clean drinking water is extremely exhausting. From small children to women, everyone has to walk a long distance and stand in queues to collect water at a specific time.
From March till August, the drinking water crisis is the most extreme. To protect the villagers from this intense water crisis and to deliver safe drinking water to the cheapest Mukti, is installing two submersible pumps one at Purba Sridharpur SAM (Sustainable Agricultural Movement) office and second at Purba Sridharpur Paschim Para Samiti Ghor under Nagendrapur GP.
The work of placing deep tube wells has started at SAM office. Tube wells will be installed to 10- 12 feet high from the soil so that people can get safe drinking water during flood too. Along with this separate bathroom for men and women will be made. 2,000 liter of water retention tank will be placed on the roof of the SAM office. In the next phase, the installation work of the second submersible pump will start at Purba Sridharpur Paschim Para.
Submersible pumps as the name suggests are made to be fully submerged in water and are designed to operate beneath the earth’s surface. Unlike an above-ground pumping system, which sucks water out of the ground, a submersible is designed to push water to the surface. When a pressure switch is turned on, the impeller begins to spin drawing water into the pump. The water is then pushed through the pump body and brought to the surface. The rest of the unit consists of a cable connected to the motor and a pipe that transports the water to the surface and into a storage tank.
6-7 labors from Barishat are engaged in the installation work. 100 families of nearby areas of Purba Sridharpur SAM office will be benefitted and in the future when the second submersible pump will be install 130 more families will receive the benefit.
