Survey Data Analysis Program on Menstrual Myths/Superstition

Mukti Amplifying Community Voices (ACV) adolescent girls group conducted a survey data analysis program on menstruation-related myths/superstitions on 13^th April 2023 at Herembogopalpur GP of South 24 Parganas district. 32 girls of the Herembogopalpur ACV group participated in the program. The meeting was organized to analyze their survey report and to discuss the line of activity in the future.

The Rupantaran Foundation, a training partner of the ACV project conducted a menstrual health survey on the adolescent girls of Patharpratima block. Likewise, they wished Mukti adolescent group to perform a survey in their respective area i.e Herembogopalpur.

The survey was conducted on 100 adolescent girls of the said GP. The tools used for data collection consisted of a socio-demographic profile and a self-structured questionnaire to assess superstitions and myths among rural girls. The self-structured questionnaire consisted of 8 questions pertaining to common myths prevalent in the Indian rural community. Through their survey the most common superstitious activities that are noticed –a menstrual girl is prohibited to enter the temple or participate in any rituals If there is a physical problem during menstruation the help of a charlatan is sought or even having a doctor’s appointment is restricted, girls are ashamed to dry the clothes used during menstruation in the sun, etc. Data were collected by interview method.

This survey shows how the existing social discriminations, deep-rooted cultural and religious superstitions among girls, and gender inequalities are prevailing in the rural areas of West Bengal. Targeted education and awareness are needed to make changes and balance cultural and social practices during menstruation.
