Mukti participated in a state-level consultation on kinship care, organized by Prajaak, Mukti’s training partner, in collaboration with UNICEF on August 4th, 2023 at The Sonnet, Salt Lake sector 1. Prajaak had previously undertaken comprehensive research delving into the realm of kinship care – a situation where children are nurtured by blood relatives instead of their biological parents. The research delved into the developmental journey of such children, scrutinizing the effects of their upbringing on their overall well-being and whether the environment provided adequately supported their growth. This enlightening research was subsequently shared with esteemed members of the Advisory Board, encompassing representatives from the “United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund” (UNICEF) and the “West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights” (WBCPCR). The discussion revolved around the pivotal question of whether India, where kinship care is prevalent, should consider formalizing this practice and whether state intervention is warranted. This discourse prompted participating NGOs, dedicated to addressing the complexities of kinship care, to contemplate and decide whether to champion advocacy efforts for a more structured approach to this pressing issue.
