That year October 16 coincided with Rakhi Purnima, the last day of Shravan month according to the Hindu calendar. The speakers described how Rabindranath Tagore led a protest against the decision of British viceroy Curzon to divide Bengal on religious grounds and urged Hindus and Muslims to tie Rakhi (amulet) on each other’s wrists to express harmony and solidarity with each other. The speakers called upon everyone to remain united by avoiding violence and accepting differences between people.
At the end of the program, Kakdwip MCDF member Ms. Putul Das and some kids recited Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry.
