Potable Water Distribution Program by Mukti at Kankandighi Gram Panchayat

Amphan, which was the most powerful cyclone ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal before it weakened, ripped apart homes, tore down trees, washed away bridges and left large predominantly rural areas without power or communications.

The damage of embankments resulted salt water gushing onto the land, which will have the most durable impact on livelihoods. Saline water kills freshwater fish in ponds in a day, most sources of drinking water disappear, and land can’t be used for cultivation for up to five years.

There is a severe drinking water crisis in most parts of the Sunderbans, the deltaic region south of Kolkata in India. Although the Sunderbans is replete with rivers, the river water is largely saline or brackish due to tidal action and proximity to the Bay of Bengal and cannot be used for drinking. Groundwater, usually accessed through tube wells, is seen as the safest water source of drinking water. Unfortunately, in many parts of the Sunderbans locating saline-free aquifers can be a huge challenge. The water drawn from the hand-pump has floating sediment and must be filtered before being consumed.  Dead fish and debris are floating in the water and the delta communities there are living amidst the stench.

In this situation, a solution for smart and sustainable drinking water management is required to give access to safe drinking water. Drinking water is one of the major problems at Kankandighi Gram Panchayat. Mukti volunteers rush with 400 bottles and 1000 pouches of drinking water to the village. Some of the bottles were of 1 L some were of 500 ML and the pouches were of 300 ML. 200 women and children were provided potable water.

This is just a small initiative by Mukti. There are hundreds thirsty to quench their thirst. Mukti is trying day and night to help these people by providing safe potable water.
