Cyclonic storm Aila which hit West Bengal on May 25 have caused severe damage to Paddy Fields in the state. According to informal estimates by government officials, the total damage in the agriculture and horticulture sectors is pegged at around Rs 500 crore. In most farms, paddy was kept in the field after being harvested; As a result, a major portion of the summer season paddy crop was damaged in the fields. This devastating cyclone has left more 100,000 people homeless with little or no access to food, safe drinking water, shelter or medicine.
In Aila more than 1,00,000 acre land has been submerged under saline water. Farmers became helpless as they we not able to germinate the seeds. Mukti Team has cultivated Paddy Seedling in four areas and handed over the seedling to more than 100 farmers. In Kumrapara the seedling has been germinated in the 5 bigha land and out of the 5 bigha Land the paddy seedling which has germinated can be grown in 100 bigha land. In Nandakumarpur the seedling has been germinated in the 10 bigha land and out of the 10 bigha Land the paddy seedling which has germinated can be grown in 200 bigha land. In Kakandighi the seedling has been germinated in the 15 bigha land and out of the 15 bigha Land the paddy seedling which has germinated can be grown in 300 bigha land. In Nagendrapur the seedling has been germinated in the 8 bigha land and out of the 8 bigha Land the paddy seedling which has germinated can be grown in 160 bigha land.
MUKTI has organized the programmed by joining the hands with SUNDARBAN DEVELOPMENT BOARD by stretching the line to extra remote areas i.e in Basanti. In Aila the area which is greatly affected is Basanti. Here MUKTI and SUNDARBAN DEVELOPMENT BOARD have distributed the paddy seedling to 180 bigha land, and this seedling has been transferred to separate vessel to Basanti. This All activities have been keenly monitored by Minister for Sunderbans Development Kanti Ganguly and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattacharya.
