Mukti stands by the affected people during the Super Cyclone Amphan

The super cyclone AMPHAN left behind, what is seen in the aftermath is a trail of destruction in Sunderban. Amphan made landfall on Wednesday (20th May 2020), lashing coastal areas with ferocious wind and rain. Thousands of trees were uprooted in the gales, acres of fertilised lands has been destroyed by the salty water, electricity lines have been brought down   and a number of mud houses collapsed.

Taking an oath of serving the marginal population Mukti volunteers started their duty on Thursday (21^st May 2020), right after the cyclone. The clean-up program started immediately; also some emergency relief was provided to the cyclone affected people. 95% families through 7 blocks of Suderban are affected by AMPHAN.

3,000 acres of “Paner (Betel Leaf) Boroj” – are destroyed at Swami Vivekananda village under Kakdwip Gram Panchayat, Namkhana, Sagar and Patharprotima Block.  At Kakdwip, Namkhana and Sagar block 17,000 houses are totally destructed and 2,300 houses are partly damaged.

Heavy rains resulted in muds mixing with pond water and thus contaminating the pond water . In Namkhana block, the river named Ishharpuri flooded the village.

At Narayanpur the roof of the high school was blown by the storm. Salty water has flooded Domkal, Purba Sridharpur, Sarjarpara and some parts of Kankandighi, Kumorpara and Herombogopalpur.

On first two days that is on 21^st and 22^nd May, Mukti starts taking a stock of the situation by estimating the damage caused by the cyclone, visiting affected places, talking with people, visiting the flooded areas. Instant relief such as puffed rice and rice have been provided to the affected people of Nagendrapur, Purba Sridharpur and Domkal.

On 23^rd May, Mukti volunteers started restoring the damage caused by AMPHAN. Uprooted trees were cut and removed to clear the roads. River Bundhs were rebuilt. All these relief programs were conducted in Kakdwip, Sagar,Pathorprotima, G Block, Mathurapur 2, Namkhana, Kultoli, Joynagar, 9 blocks of Raidighi.
