It is going to be a month since the Super Cyclone Amphan made a landfall on May 20 in the Sundarbans, near West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, as a very severe cyclonic storm causing widespread damages to houses, infrastructure, agricultural land, standing crops, embankments and fishing ponds. Embankments, which protect the islands of Sundarbans from the fury of the sea, have been breached at several points and seawater ingression up to 2-kilometre continues. This has destroyed agricultural land on which no crops can grow for a couple of years.

The disaster, the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has forced the four million inhabitants of West Bengal’s Sundarbans area to choose between their lives and their livelihoods.
Without any hope, shelter, jobs and food, people of Sundarbans are passing their days in great distress. 782 Mukti SHG members of Radhakantapur Gram Panchayat were deprived of their basic necessities. Mukti appeared as a savior and distributed relief, in association with “OAK Foundation” and “German Consulate”, to the SHG Women group.
Along with 5 Kg. Rice, 1 Kg. Dal, 2 Kg. Potato and 500 Gram Oil, Mukti also provided 1 packet sanitary napkin (to take care of woman hygiene), 3 masks ( to keep them safe from Covid-19) and 1 Mosquito Net ( preventing Mosquito borne diseases) to each of the Mukti SHG members.
Every day has become a challenge for the inhabitants of Sundarbans. Mukti is trying to give them a little comfort at their hard times.
