The Sunderbans which is known to be one of the most beautiful coastal islands in Bengal is now in ruins in the aftermath of cyclone Amphan which lashed out at West Bengal on the 20th of May, 2020. The cyclone caused havoc and destroyed several villages and houses leaving hundreds of people homeless and foodless. Agricultural fields are under water. People have no drinking water and the salty sea water is mixed with drinking water.

Mousuni Island lies in Namkhana block in Kakdwip subdivision of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. It is a sinking Island and AMPHAM helped in expediting the process. Without food and shelter, inhabitants of Mousuni Island do not know whom to go for help. Villagers were starving.
In this crucial time Mukti community kitchens have emerged as an empirical solution to feed those in need. The main idea behind community kitchen is to provide nutritious food to people who cannot afford it.
To ensure no one starves, Mukti ‘Community Kitchens’ became operational from 25th May’20 to deliver free food to the AMPHAN affected people at Mousuni Island. There are 280 people who are getting cooked foods daily with the groceries provided by Mukti. Within these 280 people 50 are under 20 years, 100 are over 60 years. Every day a group of 7-8 women cooks are cooking for these people.
