Just after the destruction of Yaas, Mukti started dewatering the ponds of the most affected areas of Sundraban. Last week 25 ponds were dewatered by Mukti at Mathuraput Block II. Yaas and the subsequent flood had left the ponds filled with contaminated surface water, debris, deposits and animal bodies. Villagers can’t use the water though the water of these ponds is used for their household purposes.
To make the pond water reusable Mukti installed pump sets at the damaged ponds. At first all the saline water was flushed out by pumping. All debris and organic matters were removed from the pond after drainage and disposed to away from watercourses. After all the contaminated sediments were removed, the drained bottom layer was exposed with sunlight to oxidize and disinfect it. At last lime was added to clean the water. Adding lime increases pond water alkalinity for more rapid decomposition of organic matter that falls into the pond after it has been cleaned.
