For germination, Mukti has distributed 6,000 coconut seeds to 4 “Mukti Sathi” at Purba Sridharpur. Beneficiaries have planted these coconut seeds in their own nurseries. They will nurture the seeds till next year the saplings are ready for plantation. Mukti has bought these seeds from Amtala nursery.
The coconuts that Mukti has bought have been meticulously chosen for germination. One can hear the water slosh if it is shaken. The coconuts have been planted in rows in well-drained soil with partial shade. Then the coconuts have been placed in a shallow hole, burying only the lower third of the coconut. Water is being given thoroughly twice a week.
Under ideal conditions, a coconut will germinate in three months, but otherwise, it may take up to six months. After the seedlings are mature enough for plantation they will be used for roadside plantations. Mukti is providing monthly food support to the beneficiaries.
