Sunderban has always been known for its natural beauty with richness in ecological diversity, yet prone to various natural disasters impacting thousands of lives in the region. The place has been a tourist attraction in the world map and also yearns for the cultural richness of the population.
Despite such abundance, the region has not shown much sensitivity towards the women folk. Thus, Sunderban remains listed for the various atrocities towards the women and child related issues.
As a result, the VOICE project of Mukti supported by Association for India’s Development (AID) is aimed to create sensitiveness and understanding amongst the villagers on such atrocities which has been detrimental towards the overall development of the region. VOICE aims to create space for the women to help them in developing insight and talk about their problems through ongoing awareness and campaigns in the Mathurapur – II block of the South 24 Pgs of West Bengal.
A preliminary discussion was initiated by the VOICE team of Mukti on 10th February 2021 at the Raidighi office with 22 women who are members and leaders of the MCDF project of Mukti.
The sole objective of the discussion was to understand the presence of the women in their various roles and obstacles faced in fulfilling those roles in their daily living. While discussion, women identified themselves fulfilling various roles in the family and outside. They discussed about the importance of these roles, the expectations from their roles and the time spent on fulfilling these roles. The women were very happy to discuss their roles and at the end of the session felt that they have been engaged throughout the day in meeting responsibilities and expectations, with hardly any moment of questioning about their own well being from people they have been serving till the end of the day.
Such a discussion led to the need for understanding sensitivity on the various issues related to gender. Mukti plans to continue such sessions with more and more women and identify leadership skills from among them who can be capacitated to create awareness on gender based issues in their own localities.
