Mukti is maintaining the vetiver grass plantation site at Nagendrapur GP. Mukti planted around 30,000 vetiver grass saplings along the 7 km embankment from Purba Sridharpur Mukti Library to Damkal Vishalakshi Temple. The grasses have grown to 5-6 feet tall and need mowing.
Occasional trimming is all that is needed to keep a vetiver hedge in good shape. It is important to keep the grass from flowering otherwise the stem will die back, which inhibits tillering and slows the growth of the clump (although the clump grows from the plant’s center so there is no disintegration). The cut material makes excellent thatch or mulch for trees and is used as an animal feed supplement.
On a regular basis “Mukti Sathi” members are maintaining the vetiver plantation by cutting and watering the plants.
