To restore the damage caused by cyclone Amphan, Mukti has planted 600 coconut saplings and has a target to plant another 2-2.5 lacks of saplings of various plants under “Roadside Plantation” project.
Amphan had caused a great damage to the environment by uprooting large trees that protects the river embankments, soil erosion, lives of human, animals and birds.
Why Roadside Plantation is necessary for rural Sunderban:
Not only disaster, the trees that Mukti is planting beside roads will also keep the air clean and can help to reduce air pollution. The trees will help to hold the rainwater in the ground.Thus it will increase the level of groundwater and the crisis of drinking water will be fulfilled.
These trees can act as earning resources for the villagers if planned in a controlled manner. The woods, leaves, flowers and fruits have an economic and medical value to society.
Trees are the homes for little animals and thousands of birds.
Tree Plantation Plan of Mukti:
Mukti started this tree plantation program on 15th August, 20. 500 saplings of Hibiscus and Karabi were planted at the roadside of Purba Sridharpur village under Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat and Mathurapur Block II. Mukti SHG members, Mukti Support School Teachers, local people along with children, Mukti office staffs planted the saplings on the occasion of 74th Independence Day. Around 70 members of Mukti family joined the tree plantation program.
Mukti will distribute the saplings of Mahogani, Sishu, Amloki, Gayanim, Krishnachura, Radhachura, Gamaru and Bakul at the other 8 Blocks under Mukti action area and that includes Mathurapur I, Jaynagar I and II, Kultali, Patharpratima, Sagar, Kakdwip and Namkhana.
How Mukti is creating job opportunities through Roadside Plantation:
When linked to rural development programs, roadside planting can create employment while generating a reliable source of income for rural communities. Mukti is creating job opening for approximately 1,000 SHG members. They are not only planting these saplings but will nurture them throughout the year. Mukti is giving them a monthly allowance of Rs. 2,000 with dry ration. At this crucial time of pandemic and subsequent periodic lockdown this earning is helping them to continue their livelihood.
