Koushalya Kayal’s life changed drastically in 2009 when the devastating Cyclone Aila ravaged her cultivated land with saline water. With her husband unable to contribute to manual labor, Koushalya was faced with the daunting task of providing for her family alone. But instead of giving up, she turned to organic farming as a solution. Starting with just 0.55 acres of land in the Sunderbans region, Koushalya committed herself to the principles of organic farming. Through hard work and perseverance, Koushalya has not only regained the fertility of her land but also increased her income, all while practicing sustainable agriculture. She has become a role model for other women in her village who are now following in her footsteps. “Organic farming has changed my life,” says Koushalya. “It has given me the means to support my family and become financially independent. I am grateful for the support of organizations like Mukti who have shown us the way to sustainable living.
