‘Food for Work’ program helps reconstructs of 2 km river embankment.
Seven volunteers from Mukti JU chapter visited the disaster area and noted that the work force of the locals had lost motivation due to delays (15 days to a month) in receiving wages making it useless in times of disaster of such magnitude.
On the other hand Mukti was feeding upwards of 3000 people per day and the river embankment had to be reconstructed before the full moon high tide to protect 3-4 villages in the GP from flooding during the next high tide.
In consultation with the Pradhan and local leaders Mukti volunteers came up with the ‘Food for Work’ program. Mukti started with providing morning meal and 2kg of rice and 200 gram Dal and 250 gram potato 100 gram onion at the end of the day. In addition they will also receive wages from the government 100 day work program.
The program was a huge success with 450 people working the first day and more than 900 from second onwards.
The success of the scheme has inspired the government and other NGOs and they too, have started similar ‘Food for Work’ program in other disaster affected areas.
Mukti is also implementing a similar program in other two villages (Kuyamuri & Purba Chintamonipur ) of the same GP to reconstruct another 2 km river embankment with more that 400 labors working daily.
Mukti JU team also donated medicine for 200 persons to a government run medical center. In addition, Mukti JU has donated cloths for 50 persons which were collected by Mukti Kolkata Chapter and distributed to the needy.
