Sunderbans, which falls under both North and South 24 Parganas, was the worst hit area because of its geographical fragility. The region comprising around 102 islands is known for its extensive mangrove cover and is Bengal’s first line of defense from the fierce storms that periodically arise in the homonyms bay. Thousands of trees were uprooted here and other parts of the state, damaging transformers and disrupting power supply for several days.

Apart from the loss of property, the major problem has been the breach of embankments leading to the entry of saline water in the agricultural field as well as the sources of potable water. Ponds had previously been used for drinking water for the cattle, washing clothes and utensils, taking baths and breeding fish. Hand-pumps were now spewing blackish water and ponds had turned black, reeking of dead fish and filth.
It is an immediate requirement to clean the pond water and make it reusable for the villagers. Mukti has already taken the initiative to dewater the affected ponds. Mukti in association with United States Agency for International Development, organized a dewatering program at Uttar (North) Kankandighi. Mukti started dewatering in 3 ponds.
Previously 6 families used the pond water of Mr. Tapan Halder, 15 families used the pond water of Mr. Sahadev Bairagi and 6 families used the pond water of Mr. Biswanath Bairagi. It will take total 179 hrs to clean the water of these 3 ponds. Mukti bought 89 litre of Diesel to keep the pump engaged in dewatering work. 27 families will be benefited by this work of Mukti.
