This is a known fact that India is a treasure field of medicinal plants having the ability to cure many dreadful diseases and ailments without any side effects and is available at affordable prices. India is blessed with varied agro-climatic conditions which permit the large biodiversity of medicinal plants. From ancient times herbal plants have been cultivated and practiced in India.
In recent years, increasing attention has been given to herbal gardens and numerous projects have been carried out. Mukti, to participate in this effort and to raise awareness of herbal plants among the general public had created an herbal garden at Mukti Gram (Purba Sridharpur, Paschimpara) under Nagendrapur GP, Mathurapur Block II.
The project started in the first week of August, 2021. Mr. Nimay Halder, a social worker and the joint secretary of the West Bengal Transport Department has allotted 1/50 Bigha land for the garden. 22-25 varieties of saplings will be planted in the garden. 1,000 saplings of Aloe vera, Tulsi, Italian Basil, Lemon Grass, Bhringraj (False Daisy), Kalmegh, Nayantara (Red Periwinkle), Jwar Bhata, Thankuni (Indian Pennyworth), Brahmi have already been planted.
10 local villagers (5 men and 5 women) are engaged in planting and nurturing the plants. They are working under “Food for Work”.
Mukti hopes that the endeavor of the establishment of herbal garden will bring awareness to local medicinal plants for common ailments and encourage the small and marginal farmers to cultivate them for raising their income resources. Cultivation and propagation will help to conservation of medicinal plants.
