Cyclone Laila wrecked havoc on the coastal Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa on May 19 – 21, 2010. A category 2A cyclone with winds up to 155kmph, and very heavy rains, it flattened or washed away homes, uprooted trees and killed 30 people. It flooded extensive areas and left more 100,000 people homeless with little or no access to food, safe drinking water, shelter or medicine.
MSD is partnering with Desire India (website: www.desire-india.org) in Nellore and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh to move stranded people to higher grounds and provide food and safe drinking water.
DESIRE India has already started distributing emergency relief items including:
1. Canvas Sheet
2. Clothes and Utensils
3. Basic Food
4. Baby food, dry food
5. Common medicines
6. Hurricane lamps and torch lights
MSD has pledged $1,000 for immediate short term relief and is working on designing projects with help from Desire India for long term relief.
But we need your generous donation to continue our relief work in providing support to the people affected by this natural calamity. We urge you to come forward with generous support and spread the word amongst your friends. Any amount will help in this ongoing disaster relief effort.
With little help from all of us we can achieve this monumental task.
