A Report on Book Bank Project 2015-16

Mukti has served around 20,000 students in the past 12 years and committed to reach out more number of needy students through Mukti’s Book Bank project.The objective of Mukti’s book bank program is to spread awareness about the importance of education, primarily in the remote areas of Sundarban in West Bengal. Most of the families residing here are dependent on agriculture and fishing for their livelihood. Poor financial condition has compelled these families keeping their children away from basic or higher education. Even though some of the families send their children for primary education, they eventually drop out as the cost of text books and other necessary things increases as they progress to higher class. In 2003, Mukti launched this program to address this issue and encourage more students to pursue their dream of higher education. ASHA FOR EDUCATION, New York extended support to Mukti for implementing the Book Bank project successfully in 22 schools in Sunderban area in the year 2015-2016.

Book bank has a collection of books ranging from class V till Masters. Students who does have no or limited access to text books are eligible for the program. All text books are provided to all the needy students on loan basis for a year.

Mukti’s Book Bank project has been able to reach an area spread over 200 kilometers. An operational process has been established with the help of school head masters, teachers and volunteers. A small committee has been formed for each of the selected school which comprises of head master, some school teachers, volunteers and Mukti book bank coordinator. The head masters of these schools are responsible for collecting books from students at the end of each year and redistribute it. At the beginning of each academic year, Mukti volunteer collects list of authorized text books from each school and decide on purchasing newly added books, if necessary. The committee then verifies the requirement of the needy students and carries out the activities successfully.Book bank has a collection of books ranging from class V till Masters. Mukti extended book bank service to 4,597 students in 2015-2016 with a growth of 3% from 2014-15.
