World Environment Day (WED) is observed by the United Nations family and by communities across the globe to raise awareness about the importance of the environment in our lives. It is a time to reflect, not just about the challenges we face, but on the many initiatives, small and large, that people are involved in the world over to make sure that the world becomes a better and safer place for mankind. The theme of this year World Environment day on 5th June was “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” The slogan was chosen through voting on social media aimed to raise awareness among human beings.
Addressing the social responsibility, Mukti has organized and celebrated WED in collaboration with Naktala Udayan Sangha and Dakshin Sahayog Assosciation at Udayan Sangha’s club ground. The president of Mukti, Mr. Sankar Halder enlightened the program by addressing how developed country like Australia is managing their environment. He also mentioned Mukti’s work in various social causes for SAM, TSS, MCDF, Go Green, EmPOWER, RISTE etc. He addressed about socio economic impact of coconut plantation in Sunderbon delta. Mukti treasurer Mr. Anindya Sen has given a brief on Mukti, explained the workforce of Mukti serving the people in the society since 2003.
The WED inauguration held lighting the lamp by eminent singer Surojit from Bhumi. He gave a talk about importance of the WED, how nature influences his creativity, the relevance to balance our environment and nourishment of sapling. Shri Debasish Kumar, Mayor-In-Council in Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Parks & Gardens has also given the speech on the importance of plantation and encourage to make our society clean & green. He has given the assurance to support Mukti’s future initiatives toward society.
There are 18 varieties of more than thousands plants like Swarna Champa, Kanthali Champa, Mehgini, Amaltas, Karabi, Krishnachura, Radhachura, Chatim, Bakul, Aakashmoni, Kamini, Siuli, Tagor, Joba, Gandharaaj, Swal Padma, Guava, Palash etc. has been distributed among the guests, local schools and clubs. On the occasion of WED, saplings of Swarna Champa & Kanthali Champa, Mehgini, Amaltas etc. are planted in the club premises by Surojit & Sri Debashis Kumar.
The program was concluded after the announcement of Mukti’s plantation schedule in the coming months and the organizers’ also committed to plant 2000 trees to green our growing urban areas. We are hopeful that these commitments will deliver sustainable developments to our environment.
