01. Why the Program is?

• The Sundarbans and other coastal region of West Bengal frequently experiences intense cyclones, floods, and storm surges that disrupt lives, destroy homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands.
• The local communities often lack the necessary resources and infrastructure to prepare for, withstand, and recover from these disasters effectively.
• Post-disaster recovery is a significant challenge in this region due to limited resources. A dedicated disaster recovery program can ensure systematic and organized recovery efforts, mitigating long-term impacts and aiding faster rehabilitation.
• COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted lives in this region, with people losing jobs, facing food shortages, and struggling to access healthcare.
• Pandemics like COVID-19 require immediate and efficient responses to curb their spread and mitigate their impact.
• Often, communities lack knowledge on how to protect themselves and their environment during disasters.

03. What is the Objective?

• To equip communities with the knowledge, tools, and infrastructure necessary to effectively prepare for and withstand disasters.
• To ensure swift deployment of resources for immediate relief during and after disasters, including providing essentials such as food, clean water, and medical aid.
• To facilitate quick restoration of infrastructure damaged during disasters to minimize disruptions to daily life and enable rapid recovery.
• To assist in the socio-economic recovery of affected communities by supporting the rebuilding of livelihoods and providing necessary financial aid.
• To act promptly during health crises like pandemics, providing necessary resources such as masks, sanitizers, and medical aid, along with raising awareness about safety measures.
• To implement measures to aid in the recovery of the local ecosystem post-disaster and promote conservation practices to maintain its resilience against future disasters.
• To foster community resilience by promoting community-led initiatives, capacity building, and shared responsibility in disaster management and recovery processes.
• To strengthen partnerships with government agencies, non-government organizations, and community-based organizations for better resource mobilization, coordination, and collective action during disaster situations.
