Thousands of houses in the coastal areas were damaged in the overnight storm on Wednesday 20<sup>th<\/sup> May, 20. Thousands of trees have been destroyed. Heavy rains and strong tidal waves have broken the embankments in many places and submerged croplands and fish ponds in different areas. The communication system has been shut down due to big uprooted trees on the road. [\/gdlr_button]<\/p>\n<p>The Sunderban is a part of the tidally active delta where the land building process is incomplete till date. Numerous interlacing channels, intervening islands with the elevation of less than three meters above mean sea level and dense mangrove forests have given this littoral tract a distinctive geographical identity. So, the Sunderban region is extremely vulnerable due to its location, topography, climate and hydrology and each cyclone is a great threat for the people living in Sunderban.<\/p>\n<p>Increased water salinity will alter the aquatic ecosystem and the mangrove forest, along with significant shortages of water for drinking and irrigation in the south-west coastal area, while soil salination is likely to lead to a significant decline in the output of high-yielding rice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[gdlr_button href=&#8221;http:\/\/localhost\/mukti-old\/product\/donate-amphan&#8221; target=&#8221;_self&#8221; size=&#8221;medium&#8221; background= &#8220;#FF0000&#8243; color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221;] Donate Now! But the fact is it is a laborious and time consuming task. The riverside slope of the\u00a0embankment\u00a0will be covered with polypropylene sheets and then soil. 1000 workers of Shridharnagar Gram Panchayat are being engaged to fulfill the task under <strong>Mukti\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cFood for Work\u201d project.\u00a0 They are collecting mud from nearby lands and filling the damage. <strong>Mukti<\/strong> is providing them grocery items and Rs. 100\/- per worker.
