For people living on the islands in the Ganga estuary, climate change is a demon they battle every day. It has already transformed their lives and livelihood. Nowhere is this clearer than in Sagar administrative block in West Bengal on the edge of the Bay of Bengal. This area is part of the Sunderbans, the world\u2019s largest mangrove ecosystem, and one of the area most vulnerable to climate change in India.<\/p>\n

Ghoramara Island, under Sagar Block and about 30 km north of the Bay of Bengal, has seen unprecedented erosion in last few decades. The human exodus outpaces the erosion in Ghoramara. While the island area has shrunk to about one-fourth of its previous size, only one-eighth of the population remains. Cyclone AMPHAN has acted as a catalyst to expedite this process. Increased salinity affected the fisheries, Betel leaf Plantation and the other major source of livelihood in the area. The people of this island are struggling everyday to survive.<\/p>\n

Mukti sent a group of volunteers with relief items soon after AMPHAN. 300 villagers of 4 Villages -Mandirtala, Bagpara, Roypara, Chunpuri and Hatkhola received relief items from Mukti. The relief items were\u00a0 – Chira (Flattened Rice) \u2013 500 Gram, Muri (Puffed Rice) \u2013 500 Gram, Sugar \u2013 250 Gram, Musoor Dal (Lentils) \u2013 500 Gram, Mustard Oil \u2013 200 Gram, Soyabean \u2013 200 Gram, Potato \u2013 2 Kgs, Turmeric Powder\u00a0 – 200 Gram, \u00a0Matches \u2013 1 Box, Candles \u2013 2\/3, Soap \u2013 1 Piece, Biscuit \u2013 1 Packet.<\/p>\n
